DAY 3 OF CREATION
Day three of creation reveals both God’s order and His authority.
In this third part of the Study in Genesis series, Pastor Kelly unpacks how God formed the land, seas, and vegetation—each created with purpose and designed to reproduce according to its kind. This teaching also addresses why the battle over creation matters, showing how attempts to reinterpret Genesis ultimately challenge the authority of Scripture and the truth of the gospel.
You’ll also be equipped with practical apologetics tools to help you respond to questions about faith, science, and the Bible with clarity and confidence.
KEYWORDS
Genesis
Creation
Authority of Scripture
Evolution
Apologetics
KEY POINTS
On day three, God established land, seas, and vegetation by His spoken word.
All plant life was created to reproduce according to its kind, showing intentional design.
Death entered the world after sin, not before—making “millions of years” incompatible with Scripture.
Undermining Genesis leads to doubting the entire Bible, including salvation.
Apologetics equips believers to confidently explain what they believe and why.
Truth must be grounded in God’s Word, not adjusted to fit cultural or scientific claims.
Salvation comes through Jesus alone—the only way to true perfection and eternal life.
BIBLE VERSES
Genesis 1:9-10 - Waters gathered, dry land appears
Genesis 1:11-12 - Vegetation and plants created
Genesis 1:13 - Evening and morning, third day
Jeremiah 5:22 - God made sand a boundary for the sea
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Why does it matter if Genesis is taken as literal history rather than symbolic or flexible?
How does believing in death before sin affect the message of the gospel?
Are you prepared to explain what you believe about creation—and why?
DEVOTIONAL
Study In Genesis Part 2: Standing on a True Foundation
Day 1: God Brings Order
Scripture: Genesis 1:9–10
Devotional:
God didn’t create chaos—He brought order to it.
On day three, He set boundaries for the seas and caused land to appear. Nothing was random. Nothing was out of control. Everything responded to His voice.
That same God is still at work today.
When your life feels scattered or uncertain, remember this: God knows how to bring order where there is confusion. But it starts with surrender. You don’t control the outcome—He does.
Reflection:
Where do you need to let God bring order instead of trying to manage everything yourself?
Day 2: According to Its Kind
Scripture: Genesis 1:11–12
Devotional:
God created life with structure. Plants, trees, and seeds were all made to reproduce according to their kind. That phrase shows intention. Design. Boundaries.
God didn’t leave creation open-ended. He defined it.
In a world that constantly blurs lines, God’s design still stands. What He created, He created on purpose. And what He calls good hasn’t changed.
Reflection:
Where are you tempted to question or redefine what God has already established?
Day 3: Don’t Undermine the Foundation
Scripture: Psalm 11:3
Devotional:
If the foundation cracks, everything else is at risk.
This message makes it clear—if Genesis isn’t trustworthy, then why trust anything else in Scripture? The gospel itself is built on the foundation of what happened in the beginning.
When you start adjusting God’s Word to match culture, you’re not strengthening your faith. You’re weakening it. Truth doesn’t need to be rewritten. It needs to be believed.
Reflection:
Have you allowed outside voices to shape how you view Scripture?
Day 4: Be Ready to Answer
Scripture: 1 Peter 3:15
Devotional:
You will be asked questions.
About God. About the Bible. About creation. About what you believe.
Apologetics isn’t about winning arguments. It’s about being ready. Ready to give a reason. Ready to stand firm. Ready to speak truth with clarity.
You don’t need to know everything. But you do need to know what you believe—and why.
Reflection:
If someone asked you today why you believe the Bible is true, how would you respond?
Day 5: Only One Way
Scripture: John 14:6
Devotional:
There are many opinions—but only one truth. The world offers options. God offers truth. Jesus didn’t say He was a way. He said He is the way. That’s not flexible. That’s not negotiable. Your foundation must be built on that truth. Not feelings. Not culture. Not preference. Only Jesus saves. And that truth is worth standing on.
Reflection:
Is your life fully built on Jesus, or are there areas where you’re still holding back?
SERMON TRANSCRIPT
As you know, I began a series three weeks ago on the book of Genesis and it's a study in Genesis and I'm actually going to be taking from chapter one and going through to chapter 11 over the next several weeks, covering the different aspects of creation and answering all
hopefully answering a lot of your questions and then also stirring up some questions within you as it pertains to creation and this foundation that I am building for the first of 2026.
So to this point in this current series, God through Moses has described the first two days of creation.
That's what we're up to.
We have learned that the word yom
is the Hebrew word for day used in Genesis and that it means 24 hours.
So it means a 24 hour day.
We have also learned that the fight between creation and evolution is actually a fight between God's word and man's word.
And in addition, the book of Genesis clearly teaches that the one true God is sovereign over all that exists.
Everything that we know and things that we don't know, he is sovereign over all of those things.
Last week, we learned that Darwin did not invent evolution.
He just made the idea popular for a pagan culture that is desperate for explaining life without God.
We learned that there are three heavens that are mentioned throughout scripture and day two is speaking specifically of the first heaven.
And that brings us all the way up to day number three.
So you guys ready to go?
Yes, the Bible is under a barrage of assaults today.
The devil is on the offensive attack.
He is out to take us down, take the church down.
His tactic is to get people to doubt the history of the Bible with things such as evolution,
eight men and millions of years.
And by doing so, he is undermining the authority of the Bible, and he is aiding and ultimately undermining the gospel that's based on that authority.
If the Bible cannot be trusted when it talks about history, why should anyone trust it when it speaks about salvation?
And that is the doubt that he is trying to plant in the minds of people everywhere.
In other words, if Genesis 1-1 and subsequent scriptures in Genesis are not true, then neither is John 3-16 and every other scripture found throughout the Bible.
Genesis 1 9-10 says, And God said, Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.
And it was so.
God called the dry land earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called seas.
And God saw that it was good.
Would you join me as we pray today?
Father God, we humbly come before you this day.
Lord, we thank you for the privilege and opportunity that you've afforded us once again to come into this place as a corporate body, to worship, to praise, to sing songs and hear testimonies and just greet one another and love one another.
God, we thank you for that opportunity that you've given us today.
And Father, in these next few minutes of time, we pray that you would open our minds.
And Father, help us to dispose of anything that would cause confusion, would get in the way of us hearing or us understanding your word today.
Father God, we love you.
We thank you for your word.
And we pray that you have your way in this place.
In Jesus' name, amen.
Praise God.
The third day marked the appearance of earth by defining the boundaries of the sea.
In Jeremiah 5, verse 22, the word of God says, should you not fear me, declares the Lord?
Should you not tremble in my presence?
I made the sand a boundary for the sea, an everlasting barrier it cannot cross.
The waves may roll, but they cannot prevail.
They may roar, but they cannot cross it.
Now if the water was in one place, it would make sense that the land was likely in one place as well.
It is probable that there was one supercontinent at one time like Pangea or Rodinia that existed before the flood.
Genesis 1, verse 11 and 12 says, and God said, let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind on the earth.
And it was so.
Verse 12, the earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind.
And God saw that it was good.
God commanded the earth with its productive power to bring forth the plant kingdom according to its kind.
According to its kind.
Now creation scientists have researched what kind means and it usually refers to the family level of classification.
As we will learn when we get to day five and six, God originally created, for example, a cat kind.
How many cat lovers do we have?
My wife has both hands up.
Notice I don't have any up.
I'm a cat tolerator.
Any cat tolerators?
Yeah, there's a few of us in the house.
Praise God.
But he made the cat kind, for example, not different species like lions and tigers, okay?
So lions and tigers are of the same kind.
They're not a different species from one another.
Notice how at the end of each creative process that God says what?
He says it was good.
And where God says it was good is where millions and billions of years does not logically fit.
By including millions and billions of years, a person is stating that death existed before the fall of man.
God would not say that death and sin is good.
The reality is this.
Death came after the fall of man and death is the consequence of sin.
You see, that's the bad news.
However, the good news is that Jesus came to erase the fall as if it never existed.
And for an individual that receives Jesus as Lord of their life, it never did exist.
Genesis 1.13, and there was evening and there was morning the third day.
24 hours.
What's the Hebrew word for that?
Yom.
24 hours.
Isn't God good in all that he does?
Yes.
He is good in all that he does.
Now we're gonna do something.
We're gonna do a little bit of role playing, not me with you, but on the slides, okay?
And so we're gonna have a little bit of role playing here, and we're gonna use why apologetics?
Anybody know what apologetics is, by the way?
What is apologetics?
Apologetics is having an answer for the question that you receive.
So given a reason why you believe what you believe.
All right, so we're building that foundation so that you then can give an answer to those that would ask the question.
So why do you believe what you believe?
How does that compare to the Bible?
And you need the Bible and the gospel.
And we're gonna role play this on the slides up here, the W-H-Y.
And we're gonna start with that first one.
Why do you believe what you believe?
Here we go.
All right, so.
man's word somebody in the world says science has disproven the bible a person a believer says why well evolution is fact thus the bible is wrong and if the bible is wrong about history why trust it about morality or salvation now that's a good question
And that's a good response that you will get a lot of times from those within the world.
But ask the question, how did you reach that conclusion?
And how do you know?
Of course, their answers will differ or be similar, but some of them may be, my professor said...
Scientists say textbooks and museums, you've been to the science museum, how many have been down to the science museum?
You'll read a lot of their captions underneath their exhibits and they'll have millions and billions of years and where that particular thing came from.
And so people will use that, Discovery Channel, Nova, science is observable and indisputable.
Okay, so you may hear some of those kinds of answers, but we're still on why we believe.
Now we've moved up to the H. How does that compare to the Bible?
So how does your belief compare to the Bible?
The Bible says God supernaturally made everything, and you can use Scripture to back that up.
I showed you two weeks ago those that would say, well, you can't use the Bible because I don't believe in the Bible.
And a lot of times we'll put the Bible down and we'll say, okay, now we'll try to reason with you.
Well, that's like a soldier going out to the battlefield and the other soldier saying, well, I can't fight you because your gun's bigger than mine.
Oh, okay, I'll put my gun down.
Does that make any sense?
Yeah.
no you cannot put your sword down just because someone doesn't believe it doesn't mean it's not true just because they have a belief system doesn't mean their belief system trumps yours and vice versa i can't go around with a pompous attitude that my belief system trumps everybody because i got to tell you even with what i know about the bible there are certain things that i can still learn
So my belief system can be changed.
Now my belief system in Jesus being the only way to heaven cannot.
That's a non-negotiable.
Non-negotiable.
I'll get it out.
Non-negotiable.
Easy for you to say this morning.
It's a non-negotiable.
So I cannot take and say, oh, okay, well, are there many ways to have, oh, there's many ways, okay, no, there's only one way to heaven, and it's Jesus Christ.
I'm not gonna budge off of that.
I'll fight till the death on that mountain, okay?
But as it pertains to other things, like what's going on in heaven right now?
I mean, I can only tell you what the Bible says.
You know, they're rejoicing, they're singing, they're worshiping.
You know, all these things are going on.
But I cannot tell you anything other than what the Bible tells me because you know what?
I've not been there.
You haven't been there.
And we can, you know, possibly, I don't believe every single person that has a book or has written an article that they've been to heaven and been back.
I don't.
I don't believe them all, okay?
They may be fascinating stories, but that's exactly what they are, stories.
They're not actual accounts.
But there have been people that have been there.
In fact, we read in the Bible of one man that did go to heaven and have an out-of-body experience.
And he even was so cautious about how he wrote it that he used the third person to explain it.
It was Paul.
Paul uses a third person and says, I know a man.
It was him, but he says, I know a man.
You know why?
Because Paul was humble.
He gave the experience.
He gave the example to encourage us.
but he held back for notoriety himself.
Or book sales.
You know, they probably didn't have book sales back in the first century, I'm sure, but had they had book sales back in the first century, you gotta know Paul would have been humble enough to not have a booth set up to sell all of his books.
Is it wrong to sell books?
No, that's not what I'm saying, but there are people that are in it for themselves.
I digress.
Let's move on.
Animals reproduce according to kinds.
We talked about that today.
So we have the cat kind, the dog kind.
Probably the dog kind, the cat kind, they started out as the tigers and the lions.
They didn't start out as little Fifi.
you know, or we call ours baby girl.
They didn't start out as baby girl.
They started out as the big lion or the big tiger.
And then from that, different kinds were born over time.
It's like the humankind.
There aren't many races.
I'll talk about that here on the day that we speak about a man being brought into the world, day six.
But there is one race.
It's called the human race.
Darwin, evolution comes up with the many different races.
You know why?
To cause division.
To cause division between the human race.
There's only one race, the human race.
It started with Adam and Eve.
From Adam and Eve, their kind, the human kind, you get different variations.
And I will show you that when we get to day six.
I'm excited.
I get ahead of myself.
Yeah.
Every time I teach this, I get ahead of myself because I just get excited about the knowledge and all the, just the answers that God has in the book of Genesis for all these questions in our minds.
Man is distinct.
He's made and she is made in the image of God according to the book of Genesis.
man's sin brought death and the curse and the origin of natural selection anybody ever heard that term before natural selection natural selection and mutations can be found in the word of god okay the reasons for those things the origin you need the bible we're but we're down to the why
We're gonna tell them what they need.
You need the Bible and you need God.
That's what you need.
You're standing on sand.
What you believe is not a firm foundation.
It is not.
There are scientists who believe the Bible.
You know, notice a while ago that that was one of the answers, you know, scientists say, blah, blah, blah.
Well, guess what?
There are creation scientists that say the word of God is the truth.
So when you say scientists, who are you talking about?
Because we have scientists on both sides.
You mentioned science being observable, but evolution requires everything from nothing
Life from non-life and information from matter.
Have you ever thought about that before?
That from a logical sense, something cannot come from nothing.
That's science, okay?
So to believe in evolution, the big bang, to believe in the big bang takes more faith because you gotta believe outside of observable science.
It's not possible.
So that takes great faith.
I gotta say they are faithful people.
Evolution is a religion.
Evolution, humanism is a religion.
You know what's taught in our schools?
Humanism.
Humanism is taught in our schools.
So they wanna say no religion in the schools.
There is religion in the schools.
It's called humanism, evolution, atheism.
That's exactly what is in our public schools.
So the next time somebody says to you, we don't religion, say, no, no, truthfully say what you don't want.
You don't want Christianity taught in public school.
You don't mind religion being taught in school because evolution is religion, humanism.
And you can go through that, and it will get people to start to think.
Not that you want to argue with anybody, but I would highly urge you not to argue with anyone over this.
It's not worth it, okay?
Don't go on Facebook and start posting a bunch of stuff.
I have people that post things to me from time to time about, you know, that you're way off, and I don't even respond.
I don't respond because I'm not going to get into back and forth.
It's not worth it.
It's not worth my blood pressure going up.
Anybody ever get their Facebook blood pressure up?
Yeah, yeah, you're laughing because you know what I'm talking about.
It's not worth it.
Stand firm on your belief and mention these things to people.
And if they want to get an argument, just say, you know what?
Listen.
Listen.
You stand where you're standing, I'm standing where I'm standing.
I'll be praying for you.
Oh, that'd really get them.
That'd probably really set them off.
You'll just have to walk away at that point.
But it's exactly what the enemy wants.
He doesn't mind Muslims.
You know, that's why the Muslims can have their outdoor speakers in places such as Dearborn, Michigan, and even places in Dallas, Texas.
they have their temples with uh or their mosques i should say their mosques with speakers outdoor speakers and they blast their prayers five times a day they don't care what the noise ordinance is and you know what nobody's enforcing noise ordinance on you know why because they don't have a problem with that religion because it's humanism
That's a man-made religion.
It's a religion based on man's word.
It is not the true gospel.
You go out there and start blasting prayers in English from a cathedral or a Christian church, they're gonna shut it down.
You know why?
Because the words of God pierce the darkness.
The name of Jesus is offensive to the world.
Not for them to curse using the name Jesus, but we as believers using the name Jesus in authority.
Oh my, it disturbs the darkness.
I mean, just go out and say the name Muhammad and see what happens.
Now, if you're in the midst of a bunch of rednecks, something may happen.
But I'm talking in places, in public, for the most part, when you're screaming, nobody's gonna say anything, but if you get out and you start talking about Jesus, and you start talking about the goodness of God, people are gonna think you're crazy, and they're gonna call the cops, put cuss on this dude, he is nuts.
That's what goes on in the world, and there's a reason for that.
It's because God is offensive to the world.
They hated Jesus.
They hated Jesus because of his message.
And because they hated him, he said, because they hate me, they will hate you.
These things have never been observed.
The evolutionary things have never been observed.
Nobody lived, quote unquote, millions of years ago.
And they violate known laws of science.
People will say, you believe in the Bible?
Well, I believe in science.
But I also believe something came from nothing, and I believe millions of years ago, I believe that, I'm gonna talk about the platypus, because people will use that as a way of explaining how you have half of one animal and half of another, because has anybody ever seen a platypus?
They're very freaky looking.
They have a bill.
I mean, they look like half duck, beaver.
I mean, come on, am I wrong?
A groundhog, I mean, a big old tail.
I mean, it's weird looking.
I'm gonna talk about that.
And so they'll use that.
But that's the only example they can use.
There's nothing else out there.
For whatever reason, God made the platypus kind.
I mean, he obviously thought it was beautiful.
You know, beauty's in the eye of the beholder.
Anybody ever heard of that before?
God's the ultimate beholder.
So it must be beautiful, right?
All right.
Let's move on.
We observe animals changing through natural selection and mutations.
Maybe from that which is an unbeliever.
Well, you're borrowing from the Bible.
There you go again.
This is another reason why these flat earthers...
They're not reading the Bible.
They'll use the pillars and all this stuff, the metaphoric stuff, the stuff that's not literal, they'll use that as their example, yet there are multiple examples of the world being a sphere, being a circle, all right?
And so they'll use that, and what you're doing when you talk about flat earth is you're giving credence to the millions of years and all these other things, and the millions of years people are looking at you like you're nuts anyway.
You're taking things outside the Bible.
I'm going to talk about things that are uncomfortable.
Some of you guys have bought into the YouTube videos.
Knock it off.
Not everything on YouTube.
You've heard not everything on TV is true.
Well, guess what?
Everything on YouTube is not true.
That's what I'm talking about.
It's not.
Praise God.
So you're borrowing from the Bible?
Because I agree, animals do change.
The Bible tells us why.
God made them according to their kinds.
Natural selection and mutations are mechanisms for change in a fallen world.
If the world had not fallen into sin, we wouldn't have mutations and we wouldn't have natural selection.
It wouldn't happen.
Everything would live forever.
Everything would live forever, yet you don't see that happening because of sin.
The only, the Bible explains the origin of life and the genetic information for natural selection to act on.
And why all we ever observe are variations within the kinds.
So animals do adapt to their surroundings.
We adapt to our surroundings.
I didn't see anyone come into the house of God with shorts on this morning.
I didn't see anyone in the house of God come in with a tank top on this morning.
Why didn't you come dressed like that today?
Because it's 10 degrees outside.
So we adapt to our surroundings by putting on warmer clothes.
And now in the summertime, you won't be wearing that parka you wore this morning or the earmuffs or the gloves.
If it's 90 degrees outside, you're going to dress accordingly.
You're gonna adapt to your surroundings.
Now some, whether they be humans or animals, have adapted because their surroundings stay the same all the time.
And so Darwin used birds on an island of how their beaks changed size and they changed shape over time as an explanation of evolution.
I will explain that there's a difference between macroevolution and microevolution, and how microevolution does exist.
Things evolve slowly over time to adapt to their surrounding, okay?
But macroevolution, millions of years, billions of years, an alligator, half alligator, half zebra, those kinds of things do not exist, never have existed, will never exist, period.
And this is going to prove you wrong.
Those of you watching online, or if you're in the room by chance and believe in millions and billions of years, this will prove you wrong every time.
And this is the foundation, the word of God.
This is all the answers.
The only answers we need in this book.
That is it done.
You need the Bible, you need the gospel.
Natural selection is a process of death.
And why do things die?
Because man sinned and death is the consequence of that sin.
We all have sinned and we all fall short of God's glory.
The wages of sin is death.
If they think they're not that bad, because people, when you talk to them, they're gonna think, well, I'm not that bad.
I'm not as bad as my neighbor.
You know, I'm not as bad as the guy that killed somebody that's on TV, got arrested.
You then point out God's standard is perfection inside and out.
His standard in order to get to heaven is perfection.
How do we obtain perfection?
Is there anyone in the room that is perfect?
No, absolutely not.
We are not perfect.
So how do we obtain perfection?
The perfection that is needed in order to get to heaven?
Through Jesus Christ.
The perfect one.
We receive Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior.
We receive him by following him.
We first yield to him.
We lay ourselves down before him, ask him to cleanse us, and then we get up and follow him.
So that, my friend, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, is day three.
God is good.
Praise God.
Praise God.
Noah, don't applaud me.
Applaud him.
Thank you, God, for your word.
Thank you, Lord.
Father God, we praise you.
We thank you, God, for your word.
We thank you for the book of Genesis, the foundation that has been set forth for each and every single one of us so that no one would perish, but that all would have everlasting life is the reason.
And Father, this day, God, we come before you humbly
Father, we take and lay ourselves at your feet.
Father, wanting to and desiring to have a closer walk with you.
Father, we love you.
Sometimes we don't live as though we love you.
And in those times, God, forgive us.
Forgive us, Lord.
And help us to forgive those that are unjust towards us.
Father, help us to forgive those that hurt us just as you forgive us when we hurt you.
And Father, I pray for those that are sick in body.
that aren't able to be with us today, our brothers and sisters that are at home, possibly, probably watching this program right now.
Father, we just lift them up to you and pray God for a mighty touch in their body.
Father, for those that are suffering with disease, we pray now, God, that your healing hand and the power of the Holy Spirit would pierce through their bodies.
and heal them, God, that they would have a testimony of God's healing power and virtue that has come upon them and has come into their life.
Father, we pray that you would give us the boldness and the opportunities to share our testimonies of the goodness of God in our lives.
For how we were born again, what that means to us,
and how refreshing it is to now live for Jesus, to not live in shame anymore, but to live in forgiveness, to live in the power of God.
Thank you, Lord.
We praise you this day, God, and give you thanks, glory, and honor in Jesus's precious and holy name.
Amen.
Amen.
Praise God.
Watch this video if you would.
Today's question is, how could there be light on the first day of creation if the sun was not created until the fourth day?
In this video, I'll answer that question from a biblical perspective.
Then afterwards, as always, I'll share some helpful resources.
So stick around until the end.
The question of how could there be light on the first day of creation when the sun was not created until the fourth day is a common one.
Genesis chapter 1 verses 3 through 5 declares, And God said, Let there be light.
And there was light.
God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.
God called the light day and the darkness he called night and there was evening and there was morning the first day a few verses later we are informed and God said let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth
And it was so.
God made two great lights, the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night.
He also made the stars.
God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness.
And God saw that it was good.
And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.
Genesis chapter 1, verses 14 through 19.
How can this be?
How could there be light, mornings and evenings, on the first, second, and third days if the sun, moon, and stars were not created until the fourth day?
This is only a problem if we fail to take into account an infinite and omnipotent God.
God does not need the sun, moon, and stars to provide light.
God is light.
1 John 1 verse 5 declares, This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you.
God is light.
In him there is no darkness at all.
God himself was the light for the first three days of creation, just as he will be in the new heavens and the new earth.
There will be no more night.
They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light.
and they will reign forever and ever .
Until He created the sun, moon, and stars, God miraculously provided light during the day and may have done so during the night as well .
Jesus said, I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life .
Much more important than the light of day and night is the Light who provides eternal life to all who believe in Him.
Those who do not believe in Him will be doomed to outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth .
