STUDY IN GENESIS: PART 5

DAY 5 OF CREATION

On day five of creation, God filled the waters and skies with life—and every creature was made by His design, according to its kind. In this message, Pastor Kelly explores the biblical account of day five, challenges the idea of millions of years, and reminds believers why a firm foundation in God’s Word matters. We're confronted with a crucial question: Will we stand firmly on God's Word even when it's unpopular, or will we try to blend biblical truth with secular science?

The message includes powerful testimonies of deliverance from addiction, reminding us that the same God who created the universe with a word can transform our lives completely. When we truly grasp that our faith rests on a reliable, historically accurate foundation, we gain confidence to share our testimonies boldly and resist the pressure to compromise truth for acceptance.

KEYWORDS

  • Genesis

  • Creation

  • Authority of Scripture

  • Evolution

  • Apologetics

KEY POINTS

  • On day five, God created the creatures of the sea and the birds of the air by His spoken word.

  • Every living thing was created to reproduce according to its kind, not to evolve into another kind.

  • The idea of millions of years conflicts with the biblical creation account and weakens confidence in Scripture.

  • Compromising God’s Word to fit cultural or secular ideas leads people away from truth.

  • Believers must keep their eyes on Jesus, not on flawed human leaders.

  • A personal testimony is powerful evidence of God’s grace, mercy, and transforming power.

  • God calls His people to stand for truth, walk in obedience, and tell others what He has done.

BIBLE VERSES

  1. Genesis 1:20-22 - The primary text for the sermon about the fifth day of creation

  2. Psalm 104:25-26 - Referenced regarding the sea and Leviathan

  3. Genesis 1:23 - "And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day"

  4. Genesis 1 (general) - Discussed throughout regarding creation days

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Why does “according to its kind” matter so much in understanding the biblical account of creation?

  2. What happens to a believer’s foundation when they start adjusting Scripture to fit culture or popular ideas?

  3. How has your own testimony, or someone else’s, strengthened your faith in what Jesus can do?

DEVOTIONAL

Study In Genesis Part 5: Created by God, Anchored in Truth

Day 1: Life Comes From God

Scripture: Genesis 1:20–21

Devotional:

Day five of creation reminds us that life is not random. God spoke, and the waters swarmed with living creatures. He filled the skies with birds and the seas with life, each one formed by His wisdom and design.

That matters more than it may seem at first. If life came from God, then life has purpose. It has order. It has meaning. You are not here by accident, and neither is the world around you. Creation reflects a Creator.

When culture says life is chance, Scripture says life is gift. And when you remember that, it changes the way you see yourself, others, and the God who made all things.

Reflection:

How does seeing life as God’s design, rather than an accident, change the way you live?

Day 2: According to Its Kind

Scripture: Genesis 1:24–25, Genesis 1:21

Devotional:

One phrase keeps appearing in Genesis: “according to its kind.” That phrase is simple, but it is foundational. God created order into creation. He made living things with boundaries, identity, and purpose.

This reminds us that God is not the author of confusion. He is intentional. He is precise. He creates with wisdom, not chaos.

In a world that constantly blurs lines and questions what God has established, His Word still stands. What He created, He created on purpose. What He said was good is still good. His truth does not shift with culture.

Reflection:

Where do you need to trust God’s design instead of the world’s confusion?

Day 3: Don’t Compromise the Foundation

Scripture: Psalm 119:160

Devotional:

It can be tempting to soften hard truths so they feel more acceptable. But once you start changing the foundation, everything else becomes unstable. Pastor Kelly’s message makes that clear: when you begin adjusting God’s Word to fit human ideas, you are no longer standing on truth. You are standing on compromise.

God’s Word does not need our help to become more believable. It is already true. Our job is not to edit it, but to trust it, learn it, and live by it.

A shaky foundation may hold for a while, but eventually it will crack. A life built on truth can stand.

Reflection:

Are there any areas where you’ve been tempted to reshape God’s Word to make it easier to accept?

Day 4: Keep Your Eyes on Jesus

Scripture: Hebrews 12:2

Devotional:

People will fail you. Leaders will disappoint you. Even good, sincere people can let you down. That is why your faith cannot rest on a personality, a platform, or a preacher. It must rest on Jesus.

When your eyes are fixed on people, their failures can shake you. But when your eyes are fixed on Christ, you can stay grounded even when others fall.

Jesus is faithful. He does not change. He does not fail. He does not lie. He is the only foundation strong enough to carry your full trust.

Reflection:

Have you been leaning more on people than on Christ? What needs to shift?

Day 5: Your Testimony Matters

Scripture: Psalm 66:16, Revelation 12:11

Devotional:

One of the most powerful parts of this message was the reminder that testimonies matter. A real story of God’s grace can break chains, build faith, and point people to Jesus in a way arguments alone sometimes cannot.

Your testimony does not have to sound dramatic to be powerful. If Jesus saved you, changed you, carried you, corrected you, or restored you, that matters. Someone needs to hear it.

God has not only done a work in you for your sake. He can use that story to help someone else believe that change is possible.

Reflection:

What has God brought you through that you may need to share with someone else?

SERMON TRANSCRIPT

Last week I was in my living room and my wife was in the dining room.

And that's where we had church last week.

And I'm thankful for that came and was a part of that service as well.

Thank you so much.

I want to continue in this series that I began at the beginning of the year in laying out the foundation for this entire year and for not only for this church but for each and every one of our lives.

I believe that a firm foundation is...

And we need to make sure that our foundation is in Christ, that Jesus is our firm foundation.

Amen.

And so we begin with the book of Genesis.

That is the great foundation of the word of God.

And that is a place to begin in our study.

Worship and in going back to beginnings.

It's okay.

Go back to beginnings sometimes we think going back to the beginning is is Old-fashioned and and it's out of style, but that's okay.

The world can think that it's old-fashioned out of style We're gonna go back to our beginning and we're gonna see what God has to say about it

God so I want to review today if you're taking notes you can follow along with this review today to this point in this current series God through Moses has described the first four days of creation we have learned that the word yom is the Hebrew word for day and it means what

A 24-hour day.

We have also learned that the fight between creation and evolution is actually a fight between man's word and God's word.

The book of Genesis clearly teaches that the one true God is all that exists.

Darwin didn't invent evolution.

He just made that idea popular for a pagan culture desperate for a life without God.

We learn that there are three heavens that are mentioned throughout Scripture.

and we also learned that the platypus uh actually we learned that the third day god created i'm getting ahead of myself he separated the waters from dry ground and he brought forth vegetation by his spoken word what a powerful mouthpiece that peace that's on god is god and what a powerful mouthpiece we have when god speaks through us

Praise the Lord.

We learned last week that the platypus was created by God to look like it does.

As cute or ugly as you may, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right?

So you may see it as cute and others see it as ugly.

by God to look that way.

It is not a mistake or an evidence of macro evolution.

It is actually degenerated from its ancestral platypus according to the fossil records found both in South America and in Australia.

We learned that the earth is roughly years old and we get this figure from the genealogy sections that I spoke about last week that are found within God's word.

day four gives the account of god creating the lights within our day and our night sky and then that brings us up to number five so somebody say let's go all right here we go genesis chapter one turn your bibles if you would to genesis chapter one we're going to be looking at three scriptures this morning and opening and that is 20 21 and 22 of genesis chapter one

Here in God's word, it says, and God said, let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.

So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves with which the waters.

to their kinds and every winged bird according to its kind.

And God saw that it was good.

And God blessed them saying, be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas and let birds multiply on the earth.

Let us pray.

Dear Heavenly Father, we humbly come before you this day.

we thank you for what you've done in our lives, the blessings that we have each and every one.

Father God, I pray today that as you have promised, your word would not return void.

And that God, whatever you want to do in the remainder of this service, you now, God, take the liberty to do what you want.

Speak to us, God, through your word, Father, and open our minds and our hearts to receive the word that you have for us this day.

Blessed be your name, God.

Blessed be the name of the Lord.

We pray in Jesus' name.

Amen.

And watch this video if you would.

On the fifth day of creation, after God spangled the universe with planets, stars, and galaxies, He introduced something completely new in human life.

The Bible describes a whole range of things as living, from birds to cattle, from fish to humans.

Since God is a spirit and alive, this is a clue that life is not physical.

But the Bible doesn't actually define what life is.

When science textbooks try to define life, they describe DNA, or cells, or chemical reactions.

Biology textbooks explain what living things are made of, and what living things do.

They do not actually define life itself.

What happens, for example, when an animal dies?

DNA and cells are still in place, but life is missing.

Life can't be weighed or measured.

It seems to be the tools of science.

The non-physical nature of life may explain why biologists are so unsure about which things are alive.

In fact, their list of living things does not entirely match the biologicals.

Instead, it calls them beings.

The word living does not appear in the Bible until God made the animals of the sea two days after he created plants.

The marvelous animals of the air, sea, and land

Where did this mystery come from?

We can't even restore life to an animal that has died, let alone create life from scratch.

The Bible tells us that life is a gift of God.

The abundance of living things all around us is a daily reminder of our living God, who is the source of all life.

Amen.

Praise the Lord.

On day five, God filled the oceans with fish, whales, corals, clams, squid, jellyfish, marine reptiles, and so much more.

In fact, with so many living creatures, it's unbelievable.

In fact, we have not even, I think...

or searched and found out the depths of the seas that are in our world.

We don't know what all the creatures are.

That's the reason why I don't like getting in the ocean.

I don't know what's in there.

Sea creatures kind of, you know, mess me up.

Some people are scared of clowns.

I'm scared of sea creatures.

I don't eat them, and I don't swim with them, okay?

These creatures did not come about slowly over millions of years.

Sponges and jellyfish coming first and then fish coming later all of them were created on the same day by God But God wasn't finished yet.

He also created birds and other flying creatures Imagine for a moment the quiet earth with all And suddenly filled with the songs and cries of all kinds of different birds It must have been amazing

But it wasn't just birds.

God also created bats and flying reptiles on day five.

And after he had finished creating all the sea and flying creatures,

and multiply so they could fill the entire earth.

Each kind of creature was created to reproduce according to its kind.

So bats had baby bats.

Crabs had baby crabs.

baby whales thank you you're you're paying attention nice this is exactly what we see in the world today one kind of animal never produces a another kind of animal a sparrow can never produce a vulture these reproduce according to their kind just as it says in genesis

Psalm 104, verse 25 and 26.

There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number, living things both large and small.

Ships go to and fro, and Leviathan, which you formed, to frolic there.

Now that word Leviathan, in the Hebrew,

means a sea monster a dragon a large aquatic animal perhaps the extinct and i can't even say that dinosaur name but some of you probably can there it is written there you can write it down genesis 1 23 and there was evening and there was morning the fifth day well let's shift gears just just for a moment this morning and action

Should Christians believe in millions of years?

The short answer, no, obviously.

Especially after what I've taught you over the past few weeks and what you've learned.

The longer explanation is that millions of years in Genesis are irrelevant.

responsible include a local flood and you've maybe heard of this theory of just a local flood that that the flood only happened where where mo or moses wow where noah was and nowhere else in the world in a few weeks i was speaking on noah and the catastrophic flood that impacted the entire world

However, a belief in millions of years means that a person must accept that Noah's flood was just a local event, that it only happened there.

Day-age theory.

Nobody?

All right, great.

You are all learning together.

If each day of creation was an age of time, that would pose a problem.

Take, for example, plants.

They were created on day three, but the sun wasn't created on day four.

Four, to believe in day-age theory would mean to believe that there were millions of years between the plants and life-giving sunlight, which is impossible.

How about gap theory?

Anybody ever heard of the gap theory?

All right, a few of you.

The first problem with that the Hebrew grammar won't even allow for it.

won't even allow as we have learned the hebrew word for yam is used for day and it means a literal 24-hour day second while it is suggested that satan fell between the supposed gap between genesis 1 that's what the gap theory believers try to explain

that there was a global flood called Satan's flood and that there was a pre-Adamite race of soulless hominids.

The Bible never mentioned Satan's flood or the pre-Adamite race or Adamite race.

Satan to have fallen on day one would mean that Satan and sin are very good because God says after each day it was good because God said it.

Surely Satan's fall was after God's declaration of everything being good, as well as he rested and sanctified and made it holy.

Now I want you to watch some videos here in just a moment.

The idea of millions of years is based on the atheistic interpretation of rocks, fossils, and history.

Some may have wondered why I've been taking so much time to cover the first book of the Bible.

Wonder why in the world, with everything going on in the world, why are you so concentrating on this foundation thing?

Well, that's where I want to show you these videos, and I just want you to pay attention.

Some of them are a little crude as far as their resolution, but you can hear the audio and get the gist of what the individuals are saying.

This is Michelle who says, I have three teenage boys and now two of them are questioning the Bible.

This scares me.

They tell me if the Bible is truth, then I should be able to reasonably explain the existence of dinosaurs.

This is just one of many things they question.

Even my husband is agreeing with them.

How do I explain things to them that the Bible doesn't cover?

I'm afraid that they're walking away from God.

My biggest fear is to not have my children and husband next to me in God's kingdom.

Look, I know people are probably trying to winch

And you go back in time, you've got radiocarbon dating, you've got all these things, and you've got the carcasses of dinosaurs frozen in time.

I mean, the Kodas, you know, they got Sue, that big, what was it?

The fierce one.

Sorry.

Terranosaurus?

Yeah, Terranosaurus.

They were wrecks.

but anyhow they're out there and so there was a time that these giant reptiles were on the earth and it was before the time of the bible don't try to cover it up and make like everything was six thousand years but that's not the bible that's bishop usher and uh so if you fight reveal science you're gonna lose your children and i believe in telling him the way it was

Yeah, whatever.

Some of y'all might be Pat Robinson 700 Club fans and stuff, but that is absolutely false, what he just said.

He doesn't understand, first of all, the flood, and I'll be talking about that, and how these fossils actually were made all at once from a catastrophic event all around the world.

and in valleys all at once.

You find fossils on top of mountains that should not be there.

Well, how in the world did they get there?

Well, the world was covered by water and sediment all happened at once.

How do you get a fish that is fossilized eating another fish?

The small fish is going into the mouth.

in the mouth of the large fish.

How does that happen?

Something catastrophic happened at once and buried those fish all at once, and it was called the Great Flood.

If you try to add millions of years and try to say science and everything else, folks, you're discounting the Bible.

Man of God is discounting the Bible by taking away from and saying that science is correct on millions of years.

False.

It is false.

I don't care who says it, it is wrong.

I go by God's word.

This is my foundation.

What it tells me is all I need.

This is it.

Actually, the Bible proves science, not the other way around.

Man, it's awful quiet in here.

I don't know if y'all are awake paying attention to me or if y'all just checked out, but I'm telling you that this proves science.

This is a scientific book right here.

Mathematical book right here.

Get deep into things, get into this book.

You want to blow your mind, get into this book.

I'm not scared of the things of the world.

I'm not scared of science because it's hilarious how, at times, science tries to disprove the Bible, but in the process of trying to disprove the Bible, they prove the Bible correct.

It's happened time and time and time again, and it will continue to happen because this is the science right here.

This is the science.

Praise God.

Let's continue.

And was there a particular point or something that you read

God doesn't exist.

Oh, well, by far the most important, I suppose, was understanding evolution.

I think the evangelical Christians have really sort of got it right, in a way, in seeing evolution as the enemy, whereas the more, what shall we say, sophisticated Christians are quite happy to live with evolution.

I think they're deluded.

I think the evangelicals have got it right in that there really is a deep incompatibility between evolution

and Christianity and I think I realized that at the age of about 60.

I became an atheist.

I was born into a Christian family and indoctrinated growing up as a kid.

That next year was freshman year of high school and I started learning about evolution in my biology class.

Then that's where I realized I had never seriously

You think?

So we have a non-believer, Richard Dawkins, that is saying that Christians or people that claim to be Christians that actually agree with evolution or millions of years are the idiots.

I mean, that's basically what he's saying.

You're a moron, all right?

evangelicals that actually believe in the six days and they don't believe in the millions of years got it right.

Now that's not saying he agrees with them.

What he's saying is, is that you're different than I am.

And that's the way it should be.

Because if you're going to stand on the word of God, that's different than the world's way of thinking.

That's what Richard Dawkins is saying.

So when Christians try to compromise their faith and try to compromise the Word of God by, I don't know, making friends with the world and agreeing with them and saying, yeah, okay, that means years.

We'll fit it in.

We'll put it right here.

Well, guess what happens?

years in the old testament what are they going to try to fit into the new testament well they're going to try to fit in homosexuality gay preachers woman women preachers come on now i know that probably blew some of you away but the scripture tells us against those things hello some of you back to the future people come on we need to wake up read god's word

And study God's word and know God's word.

Because we cannot fit in the world's ideas or compromise because of feminism or homosexuality or any kind of other fit it in the blank, you know, philosophy of the world into God's word.

We need to take God's word for what it is, not put anything in, not take anything out, and live by it.

The goats are the ones that try to tear pages out and add pages to it.

Those are the goats.

And God is separating the sheep from the goats in these last days.

He's separating the wheat from the tare in these last days.

And you see so much of it going on in the world.

of you are not aware, and I believe that it is my duty, it is my responsibility as the shepherd of this church, and as long as you are attending this church, I am your shepherd here on earth, okay?

And so as the sheep, the shepherd's duty is to protect them.

And when you see something that is not right, according to God's word, you point it out.

Now, it is then your responsibility of what you do with it.

Okay, it's not my responsibility anymore.

It is now your responsibility.

And I will tell you, there are so many scandals that are being exposed in the kingdom.

So many.

Some of you aren't paying attention, but there are preachers that you listen to and have listened to for decades that are getting exposed for who they actually are.

And people are surprised by it.

I can't believe that that person would do that.

I can't believe that that man would do that or that woman would do that.

Why did you get your eyes on a man?

Why did you get your eyes on a woman when your eyes should have always been on Jesus?

Because when men fall, when women fall, and they're going to fall, I will let you down.

Jesus will not let you down.

Jesus will never leave you.

He will never forsake you.

He will never do anything to harm you in any way.

Men will.

People will.

But God won't.

And I believe that we're seeing this happen within the body of Christ because God, again, he is separating the sheep from the goats.

Do you mean business or do you just want to play church?

Do you just want to show up to, you know, have your name checked off on the attendance record for the week?

or keep someone off your back or whatever the case is because at the end of the day when you die and it could happen at any moment any one of us could die or the trumpet of God could sound at any moment it could happen it'll be too late that will be too late there are no chances once you take your last breath once this shell is gone no second chances

I guarantee you, everyone that is in hell right now, every one of them wish they had a second chance, is crying out for a second chance, is a believer in Jesus.

There are more believers in the universe, I gotta tell you, than non-believers.

Because every single person that has died before you and before me that is in hell right now is a believer in Jesus Christ.

That doesn't mean they're getting out.

They know they were wrong.

Come to know Jesus.

Study your Bible.

Get into the word of God.

Get your eyes off a man and out of this world and get them on Christ.

Because he's the only one through this life.

Would you join me as we pray?

Dear Heavenly Father, we...

Bless your name today, God.

What a privilege it is to be born again.

Lord, we love you.

We thank you for all of your blessings, God.

And Father, I pray that whether it be in this room or online, that this message and this word and the

the knowledge of God, which speak, even if it's to one person, that brings them to a place to realize that they need a Savior, that their foundation is shaky.

It's based and rooted into the things of this world that get them out of that and cry out to Jesus.

Call on the name of the Lord.

Because you have promised us, God, those that call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

And God, I am thankful this day for that.

Help us to stand for truth.

Even when it's not popular.

Even when we are condemned for standing for truth or made fun of or ridiculed.

May we stand for truth anyway.

And Father, not just stand for truth, but boldly stand for truth.

And may you help flush out of us, each and every one, God, the desire, the appetite of wanting to be right.

The truth doesn't come from us, but the truth that comes from your word.

because your word comes from your mouth, comes from your heart.

And this is what we want to base.

This is what we wanna base our belief, our opinions, all on your word, God.

And if we don't understand,

Maybe we get into a Bible study with someone, a church or with someone else that we can gain understanding and grow in the things of you, God.

Be with us, Father God, and help us in this life to do your will, Father.

We pray in Jesus' name.

Amen.

Before we move on.

I feel compelled to have a time of prayer.

But before we do that, you know, testimonies are important.

And I always say that you can't have a testimony without a test.

And many of us have had a lot of tests.

Some have failed.

Others we have exceeded.

When God's in control, we exceed.

When we're in control, we fail.

And so I have a dear sister in the Lord.

Okay.

She got a testimony, didn't she?

She didn't?

She got nervous.

We have a personal testimony that is going to be given today.

Now all eyes, when she comes out around that corner right there, I want everyone to rub her neck and turn around and really make non-violence.

That will make her so nervous.

That will not be good.

But she's actually been on me about giving this testimony for about a month.

I forgot for a couple Sundays.

Then we were out last Sunday, so she couldn't do it last Sunday.

And then today I asked her, are you ready to give your testimony?

She said, I forgot it at home.

She wrote it down.

And I said, okay, can you remember what it is?

She said, yeah.

And I said, can you write it down right now?

You have 30 minutes to write it down.

And she said she did.

So we gave her a pen and had her write it all down.

And I want her to give.

personal testimony today and while we're waiting on her i would just ask if one other person would also give their testimony today of what god has done in your life and what jesus means to you can you do that we'll even yep he has a mic there pastor don does if you just raise your hand he'll come to you

Makes it a little easier when you're sitting in your seat.

I know how nerve wracking it can be to have to come up before everybody.

I think, did you see?

Yeah, you saw brother Brian.

Okay.

Give us your testimony, brother.

Well, it's been about 15 years ago.

For the most of my life up to about the age of 40, I was addicted to alcohol.

I started at the age of eight, going to friends' house and making moonshine and doing this and that and the other.

Well, to make a long story short, to go from there, 30 years, 40 years ago, or 30 years afterwards, I got in a bad accident.

I shouldn't be.

And I knew the Lord.

I went to church for years, but went to church on Sunday and made whiskey the next day.

Well, me and one of my friends that I grew up with all my life, next door neighbor pretty much, we went out and done our regular thing.

Went to our tavern that we go to all the time and he never made it home.

I was on my way to

to get ready to leave, and his brother had gotten married prior to that week, and he was on a flight, and he was on jet lag, and he didn't want to take his brother to work or to home, so I offered to take him, and we never made it there.

I had a bad accident that damaged the whole left side of my body.

They said I should never have been able to use my arm again, but God's...

And I was not charged by the family of the death of this young man that I caused.

I served no prison time for something that I should have.

And God had mercy on me there.

And not only that, but revealed himself.

And told me that you need to quit running.

And you need to start serving me.

And use this testimony to reach people that are addicted to whatever may be alcohol or drugs.

There is a better offer in this world than drugs and alcohol.

And that is the Lord Jesus Christ.

Saves people from situations that they put in themselves.

And that's grace.

100% grace.

And I appreciate the Lord for his grace on my life.

Thank you.

There we go.

Now I'm gonna hold this mic for her.

This is Rhonda, AKA Martha.

And she's a little nervous, okay?

So I'm gonna stand here with her and she is going to give her testimony.

She's gonna read it to you today, okay?

Hello, my name is Rhonda.

Most of you know me as Crystal and Rochelle's mom.

I'm standing here before y'all today to give you my testimony.

It took Crystal and Rochelle to get me to come to church.

They would ask me and I would say no.

I wouldn't want to smoke pot, my pot, and I would wake up getting high and go to bed high.

Pot was my addiction and nothing else mattered.

Crystal and Rochelle never...

gave up on me, so to make a long story short, they asked me to come to church.

I did, and I'm glad I did.

Not only did I come to church, I met all you guys, and I love my church family.

I feel that God gave me what I was missing, and that was the Holy Spirit in my church family, and I thank God every day.

I was accepted no matter what my past was.

I just wanted y'all to know is that you...

That for welcoming me, you guys are the best.

I am so proud of the two girls.

I just want to thank them for praying for me.

I love them, and I am a proud mother.

God bless you.

Let go and let God.

Amen.
